Study Abroad: What Next?

So, you've decided that you want to study abroad, but what next? Listed below are the things that you need to take into consideration while planning your own study abroad experience.

1. First and foremost, what do you want out of studying abroad?
2. Are there any components that you require for your trip (Immersion opportunity, internships, excursion trips, etc)?
3. What is your budget/resources? You don't want to be broke in another country!!
4. Will you be able to learn something about yourself or just something new?
5. Let it be something that you have never experienced in your life     and are excited about!!

For me, I knew that I wanted to study abroad in a country that spoke French. Two components that drew me to my program was the opportunity to live with a host family that would speak to me entirely in french daily, (Je veux apprendre parler français très bien), and the opportunity to have an internship working with remarkable organizations focused on public health, international affairs, and development work.

Secondly, I know that I want to purse a Masters degree in Europe, so I thought this would be the best way for me to test the waters and visit some of those prospective universities and talk to a few faculty members/mentors.

Lastly and most importantly, I just wanted to try something new and visit places that I always dreamt of visiting. I want to stand in the middle of the Barcelona street just as the Cheetah Girls did and sing my heart out ("You gotta strut like you mean it, free your mind"), I want to visit one of my dear friends who currently is taking a year off to experience Germany, and I want to visit all of those tiny cities and eat all of their amazing food and buy stuff!!

So for those of you who are reading my blog from places in Europe, please leave a comment about some of your favorite places and things to do in those places. I would love to try them!

  1. You should definitely visit Barcelona !!! It's gorgeous and one of the beautiful cities in Spain.

    1. Thanks! I've heard nothing but great things about Barcelona, so I will most certainly be going there!!
